Part II of my visit to Chobe National Park West

fullsizeoutput_804I think most of us have a place in the world we have always wanted to visit.  Mine was Africa.  After I retired at the end of 2017, my friend Jenny and I departed Sydney for a trip to three countries in Africa.  I have previously written about my first visit to Chobe National Park (both East and West) but I thought I would finish with my trip with a final series of photos.P1000703I love elephants; majestic beautiful animals…well I love all animals but was so excited about seeing an elephant in the wild [where I believe they should all be] and I certainly was not disappointed.  Seeing these fabulous creatures walking/playing/bathing and just enjoying life was amazing.fullsizeoutput_809fullsizeoutput_80bfullsizeoutput_80cfullsizeoutput_80aAnd as for the baby elephants; they were incredibly [incredibly] cute…hanging with their mums!fullsizeoutput_7fcfullsizeoutput_7fafullsizeoutput_808I also saw lots of other animals of course including beautiful zebra; wow these are also such majestic creatures and was fortunate enough to capture one in a series of poses with my final photo of him/her [no idea how to tell if male or female] looking in my direction.fullsizeoutput_800fullsizeoutput_801fullsizeoutput_802And then a ‘dazzle’ or ‘zeal’ of zebra [have to be honest had to look up on the internet to see what a group of zebra is called!]…fullsizeoutput_80dfullsizeoutput_805And various other beautiful animals…fullsizeoutput_803fullsizeoutput_7fffullsizeoutput_807P1000839I loved Africa/Sth Africa so much that I have booked a return trip to South Africa this September but this time will spend time in Cape Town travelling around and watching whales, then Pretoria visiting friends as well as a few days staying in the wild glamping rather than camping. Can’t wait for that; camping out in the wild but in a fabulous tent with en-suite!

Arriving in Pretoria then a day tour to Soweto

fullsizeoutput_21dAfter a fabulous time seeing lots of animals in Africa, I arrived in South Africa to stay a few days with two Aussie friends who are living in Pretoria.  My friends organised a private driver to collect me at the railway station (after my trip on Rovos Rail).  It was a pretty confronting part of town and even though I was in a car I still didn’t feel all that safe.  My friends told me later that is why they don’t come into that part of town ie it’s unsafe and nor do a lot of taxi drivers hence the private driver.

On my day of arrival, my friends drove me a couple of kilometres to the top of the local mountain to see fabulous views across Pretoria.  And they were…fullsizeoutput_222fullsizeoutput_223But before we reached the top, we were so lucky to see a couple of zebra and some other animals – photos not so good as took them from a moving car.fullsizeoutput_226fullsizeoutput_225It was amazing to see the zebra with a backdrop of the city just standing there next to the road…fullsizeoutput_221P1010084Geoff who was driving pulled up very close to the zebra and as we were quiet they didn’t move for quite some time.  This allowed me to take some photos close up; it makes you realise how stunning [and unique] these animals really are.P1010087fullsizeoutput_229That evening we went out to dinner at a local restaurant – a fun night where we enjoyed pizza and some great South African white wine.  img_2696Geoff told me that he and his wife Sue regularly go out early for dinner but he is very careful on the roads especially when stopped at traffic lights – the chance of carjacking is very high both during the day and evening!

Home invasions are a possibility too.  My friend’s home as I previously mentioned in another post, is enclosed by a five-metre brick fence with razor wire at the top and an armed guard response.  The bedrooms are located at one end of their home and at night we locked ourselves in with a steel security door.  People call them escape or panic rooms, a concept made famous by the movie of the same name with Jodie Foster as the lead.  But it’s a good solution to the growing threat of crime and associated violence in South Africa. My friends told me that all the homes around their area have these safe areas within.

The next day, Sue organised me a day tour to Soweto and I was picked up outside their home around 8am. There were six of us on the tour including the tour guide/bus driver.  We drove to Soweto which is located in the city of Johannesburg and stopped just outside the township to take photos of the welcome sign…fullsizeoutput_215Driving from Pretoria I saw many shanty towns along the way and our driver explained that some are connected to electricity and water but many others do not have any electricity or running water and I dread to think how hot these homes are in summer as the majority are made from corrugated metal and sheets of plastic and others are made from plywood and cardboard boxes.Soweto_township(photo courtesy of Wikipedia)

We then visited two museums. The first was the Apartheid Museum which I found very sad to learn more of the history of apartheid but at the same time incredibly interesting.  So much I didn’t know!  There are twenty-two individual exhibitions in the museum including the several about the life of Nelson Mandela; his original car and replicas of his cell (wow so small).  And a great photo display at the entry of Mandela’s face throughout his life.images-2fullsizeoutput_214Mandela Sculpture 2LR-resized(1)The second was the Hector Pieterson Museum.  Hector was a student at a local high school in 1976 who was marching with 10,000 other students from his high school to the Orlando Stadium.  This was a result of what is known as the Soweto Uprising.  Mass protests erupted over the government’s policy to enforce education in Afrikaans rather than their native language.

Police opened fire in Orlando West on the 10,000 students and rioting ensued.  Twenty-three people died on the first day in Soweto, twenty one were black, including Hector and two were white people including a lifelong humanitarian.  Again it was dreadfully sad to read the accounts from people who were there and relatives of the deceased including the sister of Hector.

Our next stop was the street in Soweto where both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived; actually Desmond Tutu still visits his home and our guide told us his daughter still lived there.  Mandela’s home is located at 8115 Vilikazi Street, Orlando West and is now a museum as it was donated to the Soweto Museum Trust by Mandela in 1997. images-3fullsizeoutput_217Once there we were able to go inside and see Mandela’s bedroom, study, lounge and tiny kitchenette all with many photos and posters on the walls.  It was so incredibly small and this is where Mandela was held under house arrest for all those years.
fullsizeoutput_21afullsizeoutput_21bP1010122We were also shown the bullet hole in the wall above a red framed window and told this came from one of the many attacks on Mandela and his family by the Apartheid Police…P1010118fullsizeoutput_219And an interesting fact from our tour guide…the name Soweto comes from South West Townships of which Orlando is part of…a huge day of learning for me.fullsizeoutput_218

This is definitely a tour to take if you are either in Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Day Two in Botswana

fullsizeoutput_f0

My second day in Botswana started with a river cruise (more on that in another post) followed by a vehicle safari.  I had already done the east side of the National Park (well some of it as it is huge) so now our guide was taking us to the west side.  We first saw a little wild dog running along the plains. I know it has a proper name but I can’t recall what it is (my blogging friend Mavis will surely know) It was tiny and very lean.fullsizeoutput_f7fullsizeoutput_f6

Our guide then received a message on his radio from another guide advising of a dead buffalo or wildebeest located a little off the track.  He said it had been killed by lions the day before so we immediately drove to that area to see if we could see the lions.  On the way we saw a beautiful giraffe strutting his stuff on the road and others eating leaves and generally just looking around.fullsizeoutput_ecP1000802fullsizeoutput_eb

Then we arrived at the location of the dead animal – wow did that smell awful!  We were all holding our breath firstly because of the smell but mainly as we were all so excited about seeing lions in the wild.  It was a very lucky day for us.  We saw a lioness and two babies (well probably teenagers) who had just eaten and were about to take a nap. fullsizeoutput_e0fullsizeoutput_e3We all saw three but our guide found another baby having a little sleep.  My eyes then went back to mum who was yawning ready for her sleep…I guess eating a buffalo is hard work!!fullsizeoutput_e2fullsizeoutput_e5And looks like this little one has been fighting with the scars on its nose.fullsizeoutput_e6fullsizeoutput_deWe were so grateful to our guide for taking us a little off our tour to see these majestic animals but boy did that day old dead buffalo smell!!  We then drove down towards the water where there were plenty more giraffes taking a drink…I love the way they bend their long legs to drink.  What a sight!!fullsizeoutput_edAnd several just hanging about waiting to have their photograph taken…so kind of them.fullsizeoutput_effullsizeoutput_eeWe also saw hundreds of elephants, zebra, impala and beautiful birds…it really was a magnificent day [but I will save those photos for another post] .   The monkeys were plentiful and rather sweet.fullsizeoutput_f1fullsizeoutput_f2fullsizeoutput_f3And as we were leaving for the day, a car with two tourists stopped us and asked about lions so our guide kindly showed them on their map where they were and in exchange they told us about a pack of wild dogs nearby…so off we went and found them under a huge bush.  They were very difficult to see with their colouring acting like a camouflage but we did get a couple of photos – such lovely looking animals.fullsizeoutput_f4fullsizeoutput_f5

Then back to our resort for another delicious dinner followed by a good night’s sleep.

A dream come true!!

A3PjptNcRP+kwgJwKmh+mA_thumb_72After our visit to Zimbabwe and the spectacular  Victoria Falls, my friend Jenny and I made out way over the border to Botswana where we stayed at the fabulous Ngoma Safari Lodge overlooking the Chobi Plains [but more on that in another post].

We had arranged a game drive and were collected one morning where we hopped into a large open air safari vehicle with a few others.  The vehicle was not full so we were fortunate to be able to sit on a side each which afforded us each a great uninterrupted view of the plains and animals.  So I must say I was incredibly excited and could not wait to see an animal; any animal really, but in particular an elephant and if I saw one crossing the road it would be bliss…guess what I first saw…magical!PBKwFjijRpKzuKcbaMU4Mw_thumb_83Then a little way along the side of the road, our driver stopped and we saw giraffe; and plenty of them – again what an amazing sight.E6y3DOshRLi3wUGdpZ%kgQ_thumb_56LdApkKPJRtiuPbOJ3mE%Cg_thumb_759Xcc3RqxTE2jEjkL6TJnLw_thumb_6fpJ4CrdPWQ+uzjgUvESeOYw_thumb_80We drove a little further and entered the park and first up saw elephants; this time not along the roadway but eating leaves just nearby – I can’t believe I didn’t have tears as it was truly magnificent to see such a huge animal living life as it should (no cages, no real boundaries).  They were really quite close and I had to remember to look at them with my eyes rather than through a camera lens!Qd6Ti7kRSou%eqQdnHCIkw_thumb_57Dr%jIt2OTG6ew5seSEUNKw_thumb_58YoN+uKHUTTGrq6wBEx228Q_thumb_62The next animal we saw was a huge tortoise; so cute!fC2OBCATS4mbqZl56U29mg_thumb_7bThen some very sweet baboons with their babies…so nice to see and so many of them.t6BfoeTQSEiis6PkyPj8Qw_thumb_68IusJsqB2TVCxhdBSyaVQpg_thumb_6ePLYpfrLGRK2oCLT8ayZRKA_thumb_6aAnd one very cute little baby playing on the branches…RKZ3SMYISm21wjNtGwTCNg_thumb_7cAlong the way we saw some lovely birds; all beautiful colours but flying too fast for me to capture well but I did capture a magnificent vulture in a tree…waiting for some prey I guess..and how unusual is this tree – would hate to see it at night alone!5iGUVr0sQ3yTtv8YXtA_thumb_59lrz7ljozQCaVjex%sibJkw_thumb_827WjXjIuIROu5nb%1OXFZxw_thumb_6dZMXIO8b3T2qk%Rdf0EgOPA_thumb_5aAnd then zebra; boy are these a striking animal…zOYZxlwuQ0WMtWKsM%ZuOQ_thumb_76zbdng36bRH+VkrYKsaklBw_thumb_7aUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_5fAnd buffalo… g9J2oERMRdqxI683ECRZvQ_thumb_61We then drove down near the Zambezi River and saw a tower of giraffe (no wonder a collective is called this).UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_69vZBP8BRZTj6AdFdZ5%2Raw_thumb_6cAnd along the way there were many (many) Impala and it was so lovely to see all the babies – unfortunately these animals are the prey for the carnivorous animals – circle of life I know.  And we also saw another large horned animal that I can’t recall the name of. WLr2wzDpT6yb2InpzFa9EQ_thumb_7e8Com0FtlTuapwp1raFyQeQ_thumb_66GR3NHys2QbKP2Y%ul9pPvQ_thumb_7fWe stopped off near the end of our drive for a cool drink and some snacks prepared by the lodge and had the opportunity to view the sun set; magnificent!gPeWpibRQciYa75gAZbGUw_thumb_81rdbAsPc9RJiiNmxko2E+ug_thumb_70What a day – words really cannot describe how magnificent this was for me.

Wine and wild animals – what an evening!i51fA7AjQamQdIC+B8BLbQ_thumb_48

On the afternoon I arrived in Zimbabwe, we took a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River.  I was not sure what to expect in relation to seeing animals but we saw a few which was great [and pretty exciting too I must say].  The weather was perfect which allowed for some lovely photo opportunities – but this was my first day of using my new camera so my photos are a bit ‘hit and miss’…LABrXKlEQwWRWZGloC%1Tg_thumb_3cO7NrV336S9uAbQVNR%Z32A_thumb_36It was a relatively small boat with about twenty or so of us passengers on board. On board we were offered hot and cold snacks and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.  I had some lovely local fruit and a glass of wine.  My friend Jenny enjoyed some hot chicken and a soft drink.lOszOnGwQdC3BVJ0LRNsLQ_thumb_41 And as it was the lead up to Christmas, the staff had made placed Christmas baubles onto a tree on the boat; a nice way to celebrate the festive season along with some festive music.lSZD9J5sRUeVAgkK5DDf2g_thumb_43There were plenty of hippopotamus along the way; all in the water relaxing…43bVfUPXTVeLpddNlVMtqw_thumb_49zAieIEaATRinAAANXvpX1Q_thumb_51KMd2nOJ7Rz6DVPteuqNyWQ_thumb_34R0hXCM+nQpalDzYyJPG7Sw_thumb_4bUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_45We were also fortunate to see a couple of zebra along the shore, but a bit far away to get a good shot…FzVY8cTYTlyse7icbDQ7jA_thumb_42A better shot was taken of the buffalo and the crocodile and an ok shot of a lovely blue bird. I wanted the crocodile to turn around for a facial shot but he/she didn’t.Ij+HD1JHReSybEb134vvEg_thumb_3eEBFhIoLnRLy5JQnnJKyAXw_thumb_4eqdAW6FyWTtCkxEDJ%crI5w_thumb_47As we were nearing the end of our cruise, we went close by Victoria Falls so we could see the actual spray of the falls – and at that stage I hadn’t been to the falls, I was pretty excited just seeing the spray.xOl9Y3iKRf2ToYsKcHMwHg_thumb_3fAlong the two hour cruise we also got to see some very lovely scenery…iSgp+bzxR%agXhCEbiVllA_thumb_32jE0O1LVCQmyFQV2171st3w_thumb_35LABrXKlEQwWRWZGloC%1Tg_thumb_3cAnd as we were nearing the end of our river cruise, the sun was setting and the views were truly beautiful…9e9JaJ6qSpSJQNyAFQyMyA_thumb_4f4+OZvXDqTEuSR9sOmDk2yQ_thumb_4a

A great first afternoon in Zimbabwe!!
