Wonderful aerial views of African falls…

fullsizeoutput_a3When in Zimbabwe late last year, my friend Jenny decided to book a helicopter ride over Victoria Falls.  I had walked around them on the Zimbabwe side (which I am told is better than seeing them from the Zambia side – but this was from our Zimbabwe guide so he probably is a little biased!!) so an aerial view sounded good…and boy was it worthwhile with sensational views firstly of the Zambezi River…fullsizeoutput_a9fullsizeoutput_9dfullsizeoutput_a8And then stunning views of the falls….P1010467P1010428fullsizeoutput_9cA bus pick up service arrives at the hotel to take you to the helicopter pad and the ride lasts for about fifteen minutes preceded by a safety briefing.  The flight afforded some fabulous views of the falls and the gorges and to see the water spray from above was something else.fullsizeoutput_a6fullsizeoutput_a1fullsizeoutput_a4What an experience; a touch expensive but definitely worthwhile…fullsizeoutput_9bfullsizeoutput_a7And also great to see the bridge I had seen from the ground the day before – the bridge that my brother bungee jumped off many years ago and the same one that separates Zimbabwe from Zambia…fullsizeoutput_99What an experience!!fullsizeoutput_a2

Wine and wild animals – what an evening!i51fA7AjQamQdIC+B8BLbQ_thumb_48

On the afternoon I arrived in Zimbabwe, we took a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River.  I was not sure what to expect in relation to seeing animals but we saw a few which was great [and pretty exciting too I must say].  The weather was perfect which allowed for some lovely photo opportunities – but this was my first day of using my new camera so my photos are a bit ‘hit and miss’…LABrXKlEQwWRWZGloC%1Tg_thumb_3cO7NrV336S9uAbQVNR%Z32A_thumb_36It was a relatively small boat with about twenty or so of us passengers on board. On board we were offered hot and cold snacks and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.  I had some lovely local fruit and a glass of wine.  My friend Jenny enjoyed some hot chicken and a soft drink.lOszOnGwQdC3BVJ0LRNsLQ_thumb_41 And as it was the lead up to Christmas, the staff had made placed Christmas baubles onto a tree on the boat; a nice way to celebrate the festive season along with some festive music.lSZD9J5sRUeVAgkK5DDf2g_thumb_43There were plenty of hippopotamus along the way; all in the water relaxing…43bVfUPXTVeLpddNlVMtqw_thumb_49zAieIEaATRinAAANXvpX1Q_thumb_51KMd2nOJ7Rz6DVPteuqNyWQ_thumb_34R0hXCM+nQpalDzYyJPG7Sw_thumb_4bUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_45We were also fortunate to see a couple of zebra along the shore, but a bit far away to get a good shot…FzVY8cTYTlyse7icbDQ7jA_thumb_42A better shot was taken of the buffalo and the crocodile and an ok shot of a lovely blue bird. I wanted the crocodile to turn around for a facial shot but he/she didn’t.Ij+HD1JHReSybEb134vvEg_thumb_3eEBFhIoLnRLy5JQnnJKyAXw_thumb_4eqdAW6FyWTtCkxEDJ%crI5w_thumb_47As we were nearing the end of our cruise, we went close by Victoria Falls so we could see the actual spray of the falls – and at that stage I hadn’t been to the falls, I was pretty excited just seeing the spray.xOl9Y3iKRf2ToYsKcHMwHg_thumb_3fAlong the two hour cruise we also got to see some very lovely scenery…iSgp+bzxR%agXhCEbiVllA_thumb_32jE0O1LVCQmyFQV2171st3w_thumb_35LABrXKlEQwWRWZGloC%1Tg_thumb_3cAnd as we were nearing the end of our river cruise, the sun was setting and the views were truly beautiful…9e9JaJ6qSpSJQNyAFQyMyA_thumb_4f4+OZvXDqTEuSR9sOmDk2yQ_thumb_4a

A great first afternoon in Zimbabwe!!

Africa, Natural Wonder of the World, Victoria Falls, Zambezi River, Zimbabwe

No wonder this is one of the ‘new wonders of the world’…

liGRrzxFRqihXFZuiRP4SA_thumb_25On my second day in Zimbabwe, my tour guide picked me up and off we went to Victoria Falls which is located on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is also known as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world (as is our beautiful Great Barrier Reef here in Australia)…and after I saw the falls, I now know why!!

My tour guide said the walk would take between an hour and half and two hours, depending on how long we stopped to take in the views.  We walked around the Zimbabwe side of the falls along a stone pathway covered with trees, plants and flowers. It was pouring down but still muggy so I decided not to wear the plastic raincoat provided by my guide.kIzjyDCqRA2zQ+pDXxgLtA_thumb_24Our first stop was to walk down thirty-eight steps to see a gully and part of the falls.  Pretty spectacular even though I couldn’t see the falls from this point as the spray was huge…still wonderful to see.jePL1QrVR1qRbA1gwnLLIA_thumb_1fUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_20We then we stopped at the statue of the Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone who is believed to have been the first European to view Victoria Falls in 1855.  Mr Livingstone named his discovery in honour of Queen Victoria of Britain.TF11zRcXQP6j2fOc0JbB%Q_thumb_2aAlong the walk there are fifteen stops to view the falls from different aspects.  I loved each and every one.  Spectacular doesn’t seem to sum up these views.KSiln3CVTuS+YXZnDVMxCw_thumb_2bliGRrzxFRqihXFZuiRP4SA_thumb_25We then walked up to where the falls commence (the Zambia River) and its amazing to see how still the waters are before they ‘fall’ over the rocks.q71CJoCwTSSWL%sa%BLF0Q_thumb_28jad2I8BWQ5eNpHWDw76NmA_thumb_22One of the last stops was the bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia – we saw some [crazy] people bunny jumping from the bridge…way too scary for me but when I told my brother about this, he reminded me that he had done just that when he visited Zambia many years ago.ghK8b14pQo+5CDJZhw8ppA_thumb_2dCUapKydpSxSQJ7wd2tdr%w_thumb_21What a spectacular couple of hours to see such a magnificent sight…amYq9mIdRXafKZfweiUEjQ_thumb_26KSiln3CVTuS+YXZnDVMxCw_thumb_2b
