Early morning exercise in Swansea!

Image 97During our visit to our birthplace of  Swansea, I used to exercise every morning which meant I would jog along the beach front and usually walk back to our apartment past the local homes; all whilst my brother and nephew slept.Image 56Image 61Image 92It was usually in the wee hours of the morning so I guess that is why my brother and nephew were sleeping but it was such a lovely part of the day and sometimes I would see the locals out and about with their dogs; some of them enjoying the sea (dogs not the locals).  And I guess jet lag played a huge part of me being out before 5am.
Image 95I know some people are not early risers but I certainly am and love getting out and about sometimes seeing the sunrise or just enjoying the quietness of the day.  And the views this time of the day along the waterfront in Swansea were lovely.Image 57Image 89_2Image 54Today I thought I would share the seashore of my hometown on my blog, as the photos have brought back many [many] lovely memories of me with my brother and mum down the beach before we emigrated to Australia.  I must say though that this beach is so very different to some of the big surf beaches we have here in Australia; different but still lovely.Image 63Image 87_2

family, Hop-on-hop-off bus tour, London, UK

A great way to see any city!

Image 34When my brother, nephew and I were in London, I booked a hop on-hop off bus tour through Big Bus Tours so we could see all the city and as the name suggests; hop off when we felt like it. I woke up early again (due to jet lag and did a jog around Kensington Gardens) and then after breakfast we walked up to the main street to catch the bus – really easy as there are so many stops to get on board.Image 21There are a few lines to choose from and I chose the longer line that went past Madame Tussaud’s as my brother and nephew wanted to get off – I had said to them that I didn’t think it would be that great but they still wanted to go…mmm more about that later!

So off we go and go past so many fabulous sights and structures…Image 13Image 40Image 25Image 35We sat upstairs on the open air bus even though it was a little cool but we had good views of everything.Image 31Image 26Image 10_2Then it started to rain so we moved under the canopy but still remaining upstairs – I think it’s so much better to see the sights from the top of the bus…Image 51Image 33Image 81And isn’t Big Ben just fabulous…even though it’s being refurbished, it still looks fab..just one of those incredible sights in the world you have to see…Image 48Image 44What history London has and what incredible buildings…Image 64Image 63Image 62My brother and nephew then left the bus to go visit Madame Tussades – who told me later that it was not really worth the visit…but they did have some favourites – royal family, Usain Bolt, Audrey Hepburn and Elvis – who they said were more lifelike!Image_2

Image 3_2

Image 2But I am still on the bus enjoying the London sights…Image 30Image 54Image 70Image 65And what history and sights there are, across the Thames…Image 71Image 72Image 77Looking out at the amazing London Bridge…Image 80And the Borough Markets building…Image 75Image 73What a city….and after about two hours I decided to leave the bus and walk back to our Airbnb through the parks…great day!

A drive to the southwestern tip of the Gower Peninsular!

Image 14When my brother, nephew and I were in Swansea visiting our birthplace, we had dinner with our cousin Nigel at one of the restaurants at the Swansea Marina.Image 31

Nigel kindly offered to take us for a drive around Swansea and to the Gower the following day.  We of course said yes and he arrived early the next day to pick us up and off we went driving a little around Swansea…Image 1Nigel showed us where Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have a home (Z-J was born in Swansea) and a similar home next door where Catherine had build for her parents; unfortunately both homes are obscured by huge walls and trees so we couldn’t see them.  We then continued through to Mumbles, a local township which is the beginning of the Gower Peninsular’s coastline [our mum used to take us here to the beach when we were very young so it was lovely for my brother and nephew to see the area).

We continued our drive to Caswell Bay which is very popular with locals; Nigel told us that there are surfing lessons for those interested.  We found this quite amusing as could see no surf and it was summer; certainly no surfing waves like Australia.  But a nice beach anyway with a small cafe truck selling hot coffee, tea and chips.  Nigel and my brother had a coffee and Braydon had a bucket of hot chips; must say they were very good!Image 9Image 8Image 7

It was a pretty cold day but we were not complaining as the last two weeks in London and Wales the weather had been wonderful; unusually warm for the UK we were told (lucky us).  Then we got back into the car and drove to Rhossili.  What a beautiful drive; such lovely countryside and great big homes but by this time it was pouring rain so we were happy to arrive at Rossili Downs where we stopped and parked in a car park and ran to the local cafe – Eddy’s.Image 11Image 14It was definitely too cold and wet to sit outdoors so inside we went and had nice hot cups of tea and coffee and toasted sandwiches – just what we needed.  And the views outside from the terrace area are spectacular – across Llangennith Burrows.Image 12Image 13Image 16And beautiful Rhossili Bay – I can only imagine what the views are like on a summer’s day.

.Image 10Image 17Image 18As you can see Rhossili Bay curves along an arc and the beach is approximately five kilometres long backed with sand dunes which unfortunately due to the weather we decided not to walk along.

On our way back to the car, it was still pouring rain but we decided to walk (run) down a lovely small road alongside the bay and stop at the little tourist shop where I bought a tea towel and couple of small items.Image 20Image 21By now it was time to head back to Swansea for our last night before we head out to Heathrow for Abu Dhabi…a great day especially as we got to have more time with our fabulous cousin Nigel.

London, London Buildings, London Homes, UK

Wonder who lives in these glamorous homes?

Image 8And more to the point…who can afford them!!

As I have mentioned before, when I am travelling, I love to walk around and look at the local architecture.  I love the different building styles, window dressings, gardens and of course I absolutely love to peek into windows to see what’s inside…Image 101Image 14_2London has so many different styles of buildings; Georgian being one.  These types of homes have a signature semi-circular ‘fan light’ which is a window resembling an open fan above the door and usually has wrought iron somewhere as a feature.

Whereas Victorian homes can be distinguished from the Georgian home in that they usually have stained glass windows and ornamental ridge tiles on the roof along with shapely wooden barge boards beside the roof.

I must say I still found it difficult to differentiate the styles so I just looked around enjoying whatever homes I saw and I must say I did love what I saw….but when I found out prices I knew immediately these homes are for the very rich or those ladies on that UK show ‘Ladies of London‘ and definitely but unfortunately not for me!Image 13Image 100Some of the buildings were, in my opinion, not as glamorous as others but still good to see and wonder who lived in them.Image 20And others rather sweet, when walking through Hyde Park…Image 11_2And when we stayed at the Airbnb near Kensington Gardens we were opposite a beautiful hotel with the same name as our dad ‘Byron’….thought that was a nice touch when we looked out the window and saw our dad’s name.Image 3And how about the gorgeous pubs in London…decorated so beautifully with hanging pots of bright blossoms and then once inside you can either order a small glass of wine or large…love the choice.Image 30Image 58Image 15One thing I did find a of a shame around London streets was the amount of household rubbish on the footpaths; clearly out there waiting for the rubbish man but the bags of rubbish would be put out at any time of the day and just sit there!!

Fear of heights – no problem!!

Image 3Whilst in London, I arranged for a day out with wonderful friends of mine; Jane, JP and Guy and they asked us to meet them at the London Eye to take a ride.  I must say I was a little apprehensive about being so high up off the ground but wanted to go as the tickets were a treat from my friends.  (I found out when we met that Jane is very concerned about heights so she had no intention of getting on – but I was so glad I did).

We caught a London Cab to the arranged meeting place and my brother and nephew wanted a photo of the taxi as a nice memory.ImageMy friends had pre-booked the tickets (great idea as we didn’t have to line up) and then five of us went to board with Jane waiting at the outdoor coffee shop below.  My nephew and Guy hit it off straight away and became best friends.Image 7Up we go….and what wonderful views of London.

Image 9I was fine as long as I didn’t go too close to the large windows.  IMG_1254

I think the ride took about  twenty minutes which enabled us to see all around the city of London.Image 23Image 10Image 22We had lovely views of Big Ben which really is a spectacular.Image 20Image 12We were so lucky to have such beautiful weather; skies were blue and we had perfect views of parliament, the Thames River and all the other great buildings of London.Image 21Image 24Image 27We then enjoyed lunch at a lovely little cafe followed by a drink at a local London pub.  My brother doesn’t drink but he wanted to have one beer at a Cockney pub in London…and whilst the pub was not owned or run by a ‘cockney’, it was nice to sit outside so my brother could tick off something on his bucket list.IMG_1251And after we took a walk around the city where two lovely London ‘bobbies’ agreed to a photograph and a hat swap; great customer service!!IMG_1252Truly was a wonderful day and my brother talked about how much he loved my friends and wished he could have spent more time with them – so we will have to return!!

Carmarthenshire, Dylan Thomas, family, Laugharne, River Taf, UK, Wales

Visiting family in a Welsh village!

Image 69Laugharne (pronounced Larne) is a beautiful town on the estuary of the River Tâf and the home of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas from 1949 until his death in 1953.   But even more important to me – it’s the home of my beautiful Auntie Anne and her lovely husband Bill and my gorgeous cousin Simon and his family.  These are family that my brother has not seen for over forty-five years and my nephew has never met. So whilst in Wales we caught the train to Carmarthen where we were picked up and driven to Laugharne to spent the weekend.  And what a fabulous weekend…

Our Aunt booked us into accommodation above the New Three Mariners pub which was delightful.  When we arrived there was a large group of young girls celebrating impending nuptials…and clearly the had been there for some time before we saw them; the bride to be in a furry pink pig outfit (no idea why)!Image 44Image 43I have been back to Wales twice since we emigrated to Australia in 1971 and have visited  Laugharne once.  It was all new to my brother and nephew and they loved it.  Laugharne is such a beautiful place with small streets with lovely colourful homes.Image 58Image 45Image 92Our English cousins came in from different parts of the country and along with our Welsh cousins and family from Laugharne we had a huge dinner at our Aunt’s new home – what a fun night with so many laughs and childhood memories…great for my brother and nephew to hear these stories.

I went for a walk through Laugharne the next morning; along the tiny winding roads…Image 96Image 98along a pathway through the forest…Image 68Image 70where I saw the tiny garage that was converted into a study by Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas.  The Boathouse where Dylan lived was closed as I was there too early in the morning.Image 73Along pathways with stunning views of Laugharne and its vibrant green grasslands.Image 71Image 76And beautiful views of the river and colourful plots of land across the water.Image 74Image 75Image 72

And back up to the main street past the tiny cemetary to have breakfast with some of our cousins and their families.  Image 97Image 80We then took a look inside this lovely little trinket shop owned by a Welsh lady with the strongest Welsh accent; people in this town were so pleasant especially when they knew why we were visiting.  I bought a lovely copy of Dylan Thomas’ ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’.  Laugharne, like our home town of Swansea, has the remains of an old castle so we stopped by for a couple of photos.Image 51Image 46We were going to take the train back to Swansea but Simon our youngest cousin offered to drive us; a lovely offer and wonderful way to chat to him for an extra hour and for him to get to know my brother a bit better – very special!Image 99A great visit with family!!  And an opportunity for my nephew to pretend to take a call on his dad’s mobile phone in a lovely red phone box.Image 60

Returning to my birthplace

Image 1

Last month, my brother, nephew and I took the train from Paddington, London to Swansea, South Wales to visit family and re-visit our old home and the homes of our grandparents.  It’s something my brother has wanted to do ever since we emigrated to Australia in 1971. I have been fortunate to return to Wales twice since that time, so on this occasion it was a pretty special time for us to return as siblings and to show my nephew where his dad grew up.

We decided to go First Class on the train which made the trip so much more comfortable.Image 50The trolley lady came around and we ordered tea/coffee/muffins/biscuits and chips (or crisps as they are called in the UK) as we hadn’t had breakfast and as I went to pay, I was told that the snacks are complimentary for First Class passengers. Yay…she came back about four times over the three hour journey but after the first visit we were too full to eat anything else.Image 51I booked a lovely Airbnb apartment on the fourth floor of a building at the Marina in Swansea which had great views of the water, moored boats and Swansea city.Image 35Image 63Image 62Most nights we walked out to the Marina area and had dinner in a local restaurant and in the mornings we either went out to a small cafe [where we had to take a photo of the HP Sauce that was on every table as that is what our mother used to put on our cheese sandwiches when we first arrived in Australia – a fond and humorous memory for us] or made breakfast in the apartment.

Image 40
Image 42
Image 43
Image 44

And a couple of nights after a full day out we went to the local supermarket and bought cheeses, bread, dips and other snacks to eat at the apartment.  It was quite nice to do that and spend time just relaxing and enjoying each others’ company.  Swansea is a small city really but it has some lovely buildings and the ruins of Swansea Castle which we walked past one day.Image 4Image 23Image 24Every morning I would be up very early and off on a walk around the local area – I loved the homes around the Marina where the owners have decorated their walls and balconies with colourful baskets of flowers.Image 10After my walk, it was time for my proper exercise for the day; a jog along the beach.  The beaches are very different to those we have here in Australia i.e. no real waves but I love them all the same as I recall times our mother would take us down to the beach with friends to sit on the sand [pebbles really] for us all to enjoy a day out.Image 67Image 63Image 21Image 61It was so nice to visit our birthplace!  And one thing more that was special for my brother, was a visit to Swansea Football Stadium where we asked for a quick tour of the grounds but were told the tours had already departed.  So we returned the following day and pleaded for a quick tour and it worked! Very kind of the staff.Image 28Swansea brought back wonderful memories for Mark and me and new ones for Braydon!Image 62

Dinner with an Aussie and a Brit in London

Image 6

I met two great expat girls in Beijing [one British and the other a New Zealander]; we hit it off and spent a lot of time together; travelling, eating out and drinking white wine! So when I found out I was travelling to London for holidays I contacted Annie my UK expat friend.  I also wanted to catch up with an Aussie friend Linda who is working in London and as they also knew each other we all decided to go out for dinner.

Annie booked the restaurant as she knew I was vegetarian and chose The Wolseley which has a very good vegetarian menu.  As soon as I walked in the front door I knew I had already been there –  for afternoon tea back in 2010 with my friend Sandy when we met in London to visit some friends.

Image 8

We were seated at a small table near the front door; not ideal but the atmosphere is so lovely that I immediately forgot we didn’t have the best seats in the restaurant.

Image 11

The table settings are lovely with old fashioned wine and champagne glasses and service throughout was very good.

Image 1

We ordered an entree each and mine was eggs benedict; rather unimpressive I must say as the spinach was cold and the muffin very wet – love the crockery though!  For some reason I forgot to take photos of my friend’s dishes and now can’t recall what they were!

Image 13

But I have photos of our main courses.  Annie’s was the schnitzel which was huge on the plate.

Image 17

And Linda ordered the poached salmon…

Image 18

Bread sticks were complimentary and we ordered a few sides; fries, baby carrots and peas and a broccolini gratin dish.

Image 12

Image 20

I do love how the lemon arrived in netting to catch the pips.

Image 15

For my main meal I ordered a bun-less vegetarian burger which came out looking pretty good with some salad greens and tomato with a pesto type sauce.  It was ok.

Image 16

Whilst I didn’t think the meals were that great, the restaurant is lovely and definitely worth a visit.  And if you want to spend up big, Beluga caviar is on the menu for around $500 AUD – for 50 grams.

We then left the restaurant and Annie asked if we wanted to drop into the Ritz Hotel, which was next door, for a glass of wine.  I hadn’t been there before so off we went and was rather excited.  We walked into a beautiful entrance draped with the British flag and a stunning hallway!

Image 26Image 23We were seated in a little bar area along the side of the hallway with a view of the dining area where we were able to listen to a quartet playing.Image 25Image 24

After we ordered our drinks, I took a walk along the hallway and saw the lift to the rooms; wow this was so beautiful inside I just had to take a photo.  Unlike any I have ever seen.

Image 27

Then the bill arrived; yes it was certainly ‘Ritz’ prices – approximately $37 for a glass of wine…ah well I enjoyed the experience and so glad to have had the experience [if only once].

The commencement of a two week UK holiday

Image 5

My brother, nephew and I have been planning a trip to the UK to return to our birthplace in South Wales for just on a year and finally the day arrived for us to depart Sydney.  We took a fourteen hour Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi and decided to stay overnight before our second leg of five hours to London.

Our flight was very good; nice food, good service and a flat bed (most important) which allowed me to sleep for over nine hours [there are five different amenity packs and each one contains a small Luxe tourist book but mine was on Rome; strange really as there are books on Abu Dhabi which clearly would have been more suitable], but anyway there was some face cream and hand cream which I will use.

eb

(source: Google images)

The seat configuration is 1-2-1 and when my flight was booked I went on-line to see where I was seated and found that Etihad also has seats that face to the back of the plane; for me that would be like travelling on a train facing backwards [which I cannot do] so I changed to a forward facing seat.  My brother and nephew sat together so they could chat before eating and also falling asleep.

eb2

We arrived in Abu Dhabi around midnight and were picked up by a courtesy car and taken to the Intercontinental Hotel.  But wow…that heat hit us when we walked from the terminal to the carpark – it was so incredibly hot and more so for me having come from minus temperatures in Canberra!!

After a quick shower I hopped into a very luxurious bed – but as I had already slept for many hours I was soon awake so thought I would take the opportunity and visit the gym and go for a run.  To access the gym you have to walk outside on the 3rd floor and past the pool; again that heat was incredible…but I did have the opportunity to see some lovely views of the skyline.

Image

The view of the Marina from the gym was also lovely.  Some nice boats there!!

Image 1

And then the sun came up and I had a lovely view whilst walking back to the main building.

Image 2

I met my brother and nephew at the restaurant where I ate a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast with a side of mushrooms.  My nephew also had a big breakfast and then was offered pancakes or waffles [or both as the waiter said] but decided on waffles with chocolate sauce – he always eats very well which is great.  The dress standards at the hotel are interesting with some western tourists wearing tiny shorts/short skirts and singlet tops alongside middle eastern women wearing the abaya and the hijab and the men wearing the dishdash (the long white robe) and the keffiyeh (headscarf). Such different cultures.

(lighthearted humour from the net)

Then back out to the airport to board our flight; this time on the A380 which seemed to be more spacious but with the same seating configuration..another nice flight.  Fortunately for me (as I had eaten way too much) the airline didn’t have my vegetarian meal so I watched a bit of TV then fell asleep.

Arriving at Heathrow the temperature was very pleasant.  We were met by a driver I had organised on-line which made life so much easier in the chaos of the airport and within minutes we were on our way to London.  We arrived at our Airbnb across from Kensington Park. It is exactly like the photos; modern two bedroom, two bathroom and location is perfect.  Again I was up at 3am so decided to hit the streets a little while later.  Not much around this early so whilst jogging I was able to check out the lovely buildings.

Image 4Image 8Image 7Then a quick breakfast at a local restaurant which had great service before heading to visit some friends.  My nephew was ravenous and after one serve of bacon/sausage and poached eggs – he ordered another – in total four eggs, two sausages and four pieces of bacon – not too bad for a fourteen year old!!
