A fabulous Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe….how exciting!!

mccE2FDpTmSv6Z841G3B8g_thumb_7

After our overnight stay at the Intercontinental Hotel at Johannesburg Airport, my friend Jenny and I caught a South African Airways flight to Zimbabwe where we were collected by our guide and taken to our resort Victoria Falls Safari Lodge – lovely I must say.

My room was very nice with a huge bathroom and balcony running the length of the room, overlooking one of the smaller waterholes…z5ujaO+JS5SHMKWYMGVKZw_thumb_9IMG_0120On our second night we were honoured to have a large herd of elephants join us whilst we enjoyed a mock-tail and a glass of wine on the terrace.  And the cuteness award goes to the baby elephants playing around when walking along side their mum.1gEiOkHQTISUxdY754zz9Q_thumb_cP1000290bbLZ0U%rQomkAQ7g+mlIQA_thumb_18Local residents at the lodge include a mum and baby Impala (some photos taken with my phone so rather grainy), some skittish blue birds (I think my blogging friend Mavis might know their name)…irD8jdRaRn+YqrihvN6tJQ_thumb_1amXeb2BKUSSeAF3goDOF6aA_thumb_1cUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d5Gu1LVzwREqHnkQ7741%Ug_thumb_1eAnd a lovely family of warthogs…now some people say these animals are not very pretty and that just might be the case but I think they are sweet and their babies are particularly cute…XQqQ5fhtR1mwBVwEib4J4Q_thumb_10LefeupWZRTqQn813jqwbcA_thumb_19The food was very good and there were lots of places to sit and read a book or just enjoy the scenery.ZGg1FsoEQt+HUVpq6UA+9w_thumb_17L7P8Eoc2REiCjb5ryltJ%A_thumb_d

0J8r12oXQB2zbanEIK3JsA_thumb_16And every day at 1pm the lodge has a feeding program for the Vultures and a couple of rather large cranes.  There are tens and tens of these rather unusual looking birds and they are fed large hunks of raw meat; some still on the bone and at night the Hyenas come out to finish off the bones – nothing left!myNLZFWhRzSyCWPjuJMvxQ_thumb_12 L7IpzQ3yQj+J0yzrd2liig_thumb_13So my impression so far of  Zimbabwe is pretty good and I still have a river cruise and animal safari to write about.

Arriving in Johannesburg…

Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamt about coming to Africa to see the animals in their natural habitat…so this month that dream finally came true.

My friend Jenny, who lives in Papua New Guinea and I met at Sydney Airport and boarded our Qantas flight to Johannesburg; a long fourteen hours but with a few movies, a chat and a flat bed, it was pretty good.

We arrived to some lovely locals singing at the airport; what a great way to start this fabulous holiday. We decided to stopover in Johannesburg, staying one evening at the Airport Intercontinental Hotel as we arrived late and were out early the next morning and after fourteen hours we felt we needed a little break and as it turns out was a great idea as we were definitely tired and had another hour and half flight the next day to Zimbabwe.  Of course I was jet lagged after a few hours sleep, so was up at 2.30am using the gym with nice views of the city.I must say the pool area within the gym is pretty spectacular at night. After a leisurely breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast and mint tea, I met up with my friend and we walked to the airport to take our South African Airways flight to Zimbabwe where our adventure was about to start.  I was very happy with this airline, comfy seats, excellent friendly service and the most amount of leg room I have ever seen.  A bottle of champagne was opened for me and I started off my flight with a glass of South African bubbles; how can it get any better (be assured it did)…

We arrived in Zimbabwe and were met at the airport and taken to our accommodation at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge – what a great choice of accommodation by my friend Jenny. And wonderful views of the local watering hole where a herd of elephants arrived one evening…but more on that later!!So finally my African safari has commenced and I am now sitting here in Botswana overlooking the Chobe Plains from [again more on that later]…thanks for stopping by!!

A new wine bar in Canberra

ImageI wanted to catch up with two of my good friends over a drink and dinner so made a reservation at one of the newer cocktail bars in Canberra; the White Rabbit Cocktail Room.  I arrived early to this Alice in Wonderland themed bar and took a good look around as there is so much to see inside and of course started taking photos for my blog.

The main bar runs along the whole back wall and is brightly lit with greenery at the top and a well lit backdrop of tens and tens of bottles of spirits and mixers.Image 3Along the right hand wall as you walk in there are wooden and glass ‘lockers’ where regular patrons can store their bought alcohol for each time they visit; great idea I thought!  On a closer look though I did see bottles which I think are just for display, for example Moonshine – not sure many people still drink that!!Image 2

The cocktail menu is whimsical and based on themes from Alice in Wonderland, for example The Caterpillar which is made with gin, St Germain and lemon, shaken with house made lavender and vanilla bean syrup and topped with prosecco. I am not a fan of cocktails so stuck with my white wine and sparkling mineral water.Image 9And at the back of the menu you will find excerpts from Alice in Wonderland and lovely drawings to match. We decided on snacks to share as this bar is one of those types of places where plates are meant to be shared.  I ordered the pan fried gnocchi which was served with broad beans and a basil pesto sauce along with sun-dried tomatoes [delicious] and a side dish of Persian feta.  Sharon and Liz ordered the charcuterie platter for two which arrived on a huge wooden board with smoked meats, duck liver parfait, olives, pork rilette, pickles, Persian feta and a toasted baguette.  It looked fantastic and the girls said it was very good.Image 20

Image 18Sharon [girl after my own heart] ordered the shoestring fries with house seasoning and ranch dressing – very good fries and I can say that being a total ‘French fry connoisseur’.

The dessert menu looks fabulous but on this occasion we didn’t try any – but I really have to return to try the bag of mini doughnuts served with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream. Image 19The bar theme also centres around floral displays of stunning orchids and other greenery which makes the bar very feminine…I loved it!  The visual centrepiece of this bar is a large LED flatscreen attached to the roof, showing a live feed of the movie Alice in Wonderland [minus the sound] – what a fabulous idea!Image 1

Image 11Velour couches frame all areas of the interior, with a lower area complete with an antique sideboard as a DJ table. The decorations are lovely and the checkered wallpaper just adds to that classiness.Image 15Image 16Image 12A great place for a cocktail before dinner or a longer evening with drinks and snacks.

The Centenary of Commonwealth Policing in Australia

Image 9

Last month marked the centenary of Commonwealth policing in Australia and to commemorate the occasion, many of us in the Australian Federal Police travelled to Warwick in Queensland – the location of where Commonwealth policing began – to reflect on how and why the AFP came into existence.Image 23Warwick is significant in the establishment of the Australian Federal Police as its the location of an assault of the then Prime Minister who was in Warwick giving a speech at the local railway station when an egg was thrown in his direction, knocking off his hat.  The Prime Minister asked the local police sergeant to arrest the offender but  interestingly, the sergeant refused, saying it was not in his jurisdiction to take action.

Angered by this, the Prime Minister said he intended to create his own police force – and so he did; the Commonwealth Police was formed which in 1979 became the Australian Federal Police.

So enough history lessons.  We arrived in Warwick and stayed at The Abbey of the Roses, a beautiful heritage listed country house manor.  Such a beautiful building with gorgeous gardens although my photo below does not do them any justice.Image 14We walked in through huge wooden doors with stained glass windows and were taken to our rooms – there are thirteen in total; all very lovely and some with beautiful stained windows similar to those above the front entry doors.  Image 12Image 1_2Image 10Image 2The manor also has a guest lounge room with open fire for the cold winter evenings and a dining room with gorgeous velvet covered chairs.Image 11Our first official event was to view the re-enactment of the famous egg throwing incident at the train station.  Really well put together by the Warwick community.  Image 21As we were representing the AFP, we all wore our uniforms and three of us had a quick photo opportunity outside the main doors of the manor and a larger group photo outside the train station after the re-inactment.Image 15Image 38A commemorative plaque was unveiled by our Commissioner and the local Member of Parliament followed by our Commissioner doing some quick media interviews.Image 28Image 30Image 33Our next official function was a dinner so we went back to the manor and changed into our Mess uniforms and again had some photos taken, but this time on the stairs in the manor.  My friend Jane and I had a couple more photos taken along with a few of me and the Commissioner as this was the last time I was to wear my Mess uniform as a member of the AFP; I have since retired – 30 November after thirty-four and a half years!Image 51Image 6Image 40And finally a photograph of all of us at our dinner function; a great weekend representing the AFP.Image 1

A long lunch with friends in country Victoria

dfIn October this year, I met my friend Sandy in Melbourne.  I travelled with my Canberra based friend Jane and prior to our travel I contacted two friends I used to work with (and had visited them both in NY and London when they lived there), so it was obvious that we would also visit them whilst so much closer in Melbourne.

We had to catch the train to country Victoria which was about one hour from the city of Melbourne.  I took us to the local train station which we then found out was the wrong station and had to book an Uber ride as the correct station was about fifteen minutes away.  Note: friends unhappy!!

And as I do not catch trains very regularly (or really at all), I assumed the trains would run every ten or so minutes so didn’t bother checking the train timetable.  Unfortunately we missed the train by about eight minutes so had to wait another hour for the next one.  Note: friends more unhappy!! So Jane told Sandy and I she would now take over all arrangements for our travel and found out our train departed from platform 4b which is where we went and sat to patiently wait for the train.stationPlatform 4b is next to platform 4a and as we walked past we saw a train there, but as Jane had the lead we waited to hear from her….[silly us] so this was not good when we missed another train as it departed from 4a not 4b.  Imagine how we mocked Jane!

So now we are very late for a special lunch so we decided to forego the train trip and take a very expensive Uber ride to country Victoria!!  Our friends we were going to visit thought our regular updates most amusing!!

But it was worth the drama when we ‘finally’ arrived in country Trentham and walked into du Fermier restaurant. ImageOur dear friends, chef Annie and wait staff were all waiting for us and had pre-arranged a lovely meal taking into consideration my dietary needs.  The menu at this fabulous restaurant is created from fresh food from the garden and meats and poultry from the surrounding region – exceptional food I must say!

We started off with a lovely bottle of Aussie sparkling wine and sparkling mineral water and were brought a lovely plate of fresh radish with butter and the most beautiful bread.  {I had no idea you can eat radish alone with butter – yum].Image 1Image 2Chef Annie creates a seasonal menu and sometimes the dishes are plated, sometimes shared, but always they revolve around what is being harvested from the garden or taken from the store cupboard.

I was then served a delicious dish of fresh asparagus with other greens and a perfectly poached egg…yum!!Image 3The others were served dishes of duck which came out beautifully presented and I am told delicious.Image 6Image 5My friend Sandy, who doesn’t eat duck [amongst many other things], had a pear, rocket and parmesan cheese salad.Image 4At the same time as our main course arrived, we were also served a dish of scolloped potatoes to share which were oven baked in a cream sauce.Image 7Our main courses consisted of a potato rosti with salad and dressing for me and a fresh fish dish for others.

Image 8Image 9It really is amazing how different fresh food from the paddock tastes – love it.

Our dessert was vanilla bean ice cream and a home made (of course) tart…by this stage we were all pretty full but all tried our best to eat it all up!Image 10Image 11Annie also sells beautiful seasonal jams and preserves. I bought a jar of raspberry jam and marmalade [which I gave to a friend who said it was delicious).  And I love the raspberry jam.

Then our friends drove us to the train station [to make sure we caught the return train I guess] and yes we did make it (thanks to them; not because of anything Jane, Sandy and I did).Image 12

Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, Empire State Building, Friends, Grimaldi's Pizzeria, holidays, National September 11 Memorial, New York City, USA

Final days in New York city…

IMG_9874I look back now and realise I do miss New York; the hustle and bustle, those wonderful yellow taxi cabs with constant horn blowing and the sights that are famous and known throughout the world.  My two friends Tracey and Sandy and I went there in 2015 and I can’t believe its been two years; where does the time go.  This post will cover a few of the places we visited whilst in NYC.

I really enjoyed our visit to Brooklyn.  I hadn’t been there before on previous visits to New York but Tracey booked us on a bus tour and I have to say I loved it that bridge is just beautiful; and the lovely views looking from Brooklyn back to NYC.P1000257P1000247P1000150P1000245One of the main reasons my friend booked this tour was to visit a wonderful pizza restaurant called Grimaldi’s whose history of coal-fired brick oven pizza cooking can be traced to the first pizzeria in America back in 1905. It was a fabulous little restaurant and just before lunch there was already a lengthy line up waiting to get in but as we were on a bus tour, we went straight in.P1000266Image 1

P1000271We also took a cruise of NY Harbour one afternoon which was a great way to see the city buildings and the Statue of Liberty although I hear the Staten Island ferry is a better way to get close to the statue and its free.P1000136P1000137P1000139P1000263We also went to the National September 11 Memorial but didn’t go into the Museum as the line was very long.  Tracey had visited the museum before and said it was worth the visit but as we were time poor we decided not to line up.  We were so glad we paid our respects at the Memorial though; it’s a beautiful site for such a tragic event.P1000118P1000117It was our friend Sandy’s first visit to New York so we wanted to make sure she went to the tope of the Empire State Building.  We hopped off the hop on hop off bus tour at this stop and went to the viewing platform for some beautiful sights of NYC.IMG_9876IMG_9870IMG_9862Coney Island was another place we went to on the bus tour to Brooklyn.  This was a nice place to see and just take a stroll along the beachfront. The huge roller coaster was not working but I wasn’t sure if that was a long term thing or it was just closed for the day.P1000281P1000286P1000297P1000299We also had drinks at a rooftop bar in NYC with fabulous views and excellent cocktails!!IMG_9868IMG_9869
