A week in New York visiting friends
A couple of years ago, along with two friends from Australia we travelled to New York to visit other friends who were living in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Our friends were working in NY and were provided with a stunning four bedroom, three bathroom apartment with stunning views of the East River as part of their work package – so lucky – for them… and us!As I think everyone knows, NY is famous for its bagels; our friends told us about a lovely little shop just a ten minute walk from the apartment that sold the most delicious fresh bagels with all sorts of toppings; my favourite – egg salad with chives. Along the way we passed gorgeous buildings and flowering bushes; benefits of visiting in the spring. We planned and paid for a lot of our NY day tours from Australia and one was a bus tour seeing the sights of both uptown and downtown. We chose the Big Bus Tour Company and from our friend’s apartment we walked to the bus stop and sat upstairs on the bus, which afforded us the opportunity to see the buildings and other sights without any obstructions – and of course there are so many colourful sights in NY…And of course my (and I think many others’) favourite building – the iron building…or flat iron building – one of the two but I love it anyway! And that glorious Empire State Building [which we did go up to the top…but more of the views on another post]And then there is the famous Macy’s…we did a bit of shopping there and my friends bought so (so) many clothes and shoes whilst I think I only bought one item…just not in the mood for shopping! The Trump Building is always good to see and we stopped off to take a look inside [before the current US President was elected] and then to Wall Street and a beautiful church just there in-between the high rise buildings of NY.We went past the Brooklyn Bridge and one thing I regret is not walking it…maybe another time. And one photo I took was of a lovely old building with a huge skyscraper in the background…bit mystical I thought!I think the best way to see a city is either walk or take the hop-on-hop-off bus tour…the bus allows you to see all the famous sights within a day or two!
We did also see the New York Times Building and decided at that point to hop off and have a drink and some lunch and when walking back through Broadway we saw a star – first and only – so clearly had to take a photo…Tyne Daly- she looked great!

Love love love love love this post, Sue, as much as I love love love love NYC !!! I’d never get enough of this city, and I have to admit I am a bit jealous that you got to stay in that stunningdly described apartment in the Upper East Side. I can see from the window you were near the bridge over which the Air Tramway rides from Manhattan to Roosevelt island: great area! And you’re right, the bagels around there are delicious! I was not expecting to read such a post from you today, but I’m so glad, it brings back great memories of New-York city, especially the Flatiron building, my favorite building of all! Xxxx

I loved my winter week in New York City and your post brought back many fond memories from that trip. The Flat Iron is my favourite building in the city too. Even though it was early January and very cold we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge twice, once during the day and the second time late evening. Hope you get a chance to do this next time. I adored everything about the city and I’ll look forward to reading more of your stay.

Amazing city. So many buildings, so many people. So many taxicabs! I remember being up on the Empire State Building looking up the broad avenue toward the U.N. building and nearly all the cars in the street were yellow cabs!

Hi Sophie. Thanks so much. It’s funny as I was typing last night I was thinking of you and your visits to NY in the past and your pastrami sandwich I remember you loved. The apartment w stayed in was fabulous. Dread to think how much it cost if my friends had to pay for it. Xx

Hey Sue!
That’s awesome you got to go to the top of the Empire State Building! We tried going the very night we were there but they were sold out unfortunately. I definitely want to walk along the bridge as well, I live somewhat close to the city and you have already done more than me! I need to keep up! I really like the photos!
