Dinner in Canberra
A colleague I know from Queensland was recently successful with a senior job in my organisation, so I thought we should go out to dinner to a really nice restaurant to show her a little bit of the Canberra restaurant scene. One Wednesday night in February my friend Natalie arranged the dinner and off we went to a restaurant called Pomegranate which serves modern Australian Food with a Mediterranean twist!
It’s a really lovely restaurant and has a fabulous menu; so much to choose from.
For entree I chose the trio of dips (chilli, hommus and eggplant) with olives and pickled cabbage along with some lovely fresh bread.
For main course I ordered the baked eggplant boat filled with slow braised potato, zucchini, carrot, green beans and tomato. This was absolutely delicious and so healthy.
My friends ordered a range of dishes for their entrees, [several ordering the same] the first being the Atlantic salmon marinated in apple sider vinegar with onion, chilli and garlic and I think the other dish was either prawns or balmain bugs with a lemon yoghurt dressing. I should have made a note of the dishes!!
The mains my friends chose [again several ordering the same dishes] were the duck ravioli which was served with a pomegranate sauce with carrot puree and zucchini and also the Hiroshima kingfish with braised leeks and carrot and Dijon mustard dressing.
My friends also ordered a couple of side dishes; broccolini with goats curd with caramelised onions and walnuts and the mixed leaf salad with goats fetta cheese, walnuts and tomatoes and dressed with a balsamic vinegar.
After a little break, our waitress asked if we wanted dessert, well I was a bit full but my friends ordered a couple of dishes that looked fantastic and I was told were delicious.
The mixed nut ice-cream with cinnamon crunch and caramel sauce looked fabulous!
And then there was the beautifully displayed passionfruit cheesecake tart served with pomegranate and saffron icecream, honey caviar and fresh berries and topped with a macaroon and flower bud. My friends said this was amazing!
We enjoyed some lovely wines to go with our meals and I must say it’s a restaurant I need to come back to.

Stunning, once more! It’s funny you picked the steak tartare photograph as a header to your post, because I made one last night at home – and it didn’t look as pretty as this one! But the taste was good though 🙂 I’m eager to try cooking the eggplant boat with baked vegetables, I’m sure it tastes lovely!

Another lovely restaurant meal Sue’. I was just thinking back a number of years to spending Easter in Sydney and visiting the Royal Easter Show! They had a large tent filled with Show bags for sale and the boys, then at primary school took some time to select which ones they wanted. It was only a few months ago that I found one of these bags ‘Sydney Swans’ lingering at the back of a wardrobe so I took it down to a charity shop with a pile of other stuff! Hope you get a nice big chocolate egg!

Well you know what that photo didn’t actually come from that restaurant but as I chose it I thought of you as I recall you and Jerome like that dish. Please do try and make the eggplant. It was truly delicious. Happy Easter Sophie. Ps thanks for your email. I have kept it for this weekend to read.

Hi Marion. Funny you took that particular bag to the charity shop as I just bought my brother and nephew tickets to see Sydney Swans playing Liverpool FC who are visiting from England in May. Happy Easter to you as guess you are still in HK.

They’re not high end, but my favourite eateries when I lived in Canberra were Silo in Kingston and the Yarralumla turkish pizza place, next to the pie shop.

Happy Easter to you too, and thanks for your thoughts in regards to the Steak Tartare (and my email) ! Now that you mention it, I think I now recall it was a photo from another restaurant post I had too commented on, months ago!

Thanks Caren. I do eat dessert, not all the time as otherwise I would be the size of a house, but this one was particularly good.

Sue T…just amazing dishes! Such food adventures you have. I had to actually look up what a ‘balmain bug’ was. I know them as ‘squat lobsters’. Thank you for sharing this amazing meal. 🌍
