Patisseze – The Home of the Freak Shake
(photograph courtesy of http://www.abc.com.au)
I had heard of this new (ish) cafe in an upmarket suburb of Canberra but at the same time, I heard there were long queues of people waiting to get in every weekend; so decided I would not go. Then a second shop opened in the centre of Canberra city so with three of my very good friends I decided to go for breakfast. The cafes are owned and operated by a mother and daughter who were contestants on the TV cooking show My Kitchen Rules. The city cafe has a great wall poster of John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson both holding one of the cafe’s famous ‘freak shakes’.
The menu is extensive and you can order burgers all day (even for breakfast) and breakfast all day. I love this idea as sometimes you just feel like scrambled eggs at 2pm. There is a lot of vegetarian choices on the menu and also several vegan dishes. The desserts are wonderful too.
I ordered the scrambled free range eggs on sourdough toast with a side of mushrooms. My friends ordered the corn and zucchini fritters with roasted capsicum, house made salsa and smashed avocado, the brekkie burger on a brioche milk bun containing smokehouse bacon, fried egg, house made BBQ relish and bacon jam and my friend, Jon, who is travelling to China with me next month ordered the ham hock, heirloom tomato, smoked goats cheese omelette.
The food was presented really well and tasty but Jon said he couldn’t find any ham in his omelette. And we ordered coffees and mineral water and whilst the cafe wasn’t particularly busy they took longer than fifteen minutes to arrive…bit annoying!!
None of us wanted to try the ‘freak shake’ as they looked too filling and much too sweet for us but others in the cafe ordered them and they looked pretty spectacular. I did want to buy one of the cakes to take away as they are spectacular looking too.
I ended up buying a cake called ‘white velvet’ which has white chocolate, lychees, cream and coconut…I haven’t tasted it yet but it really looks good.
There are many other fabulous cakes and they all looked incredible and the small cake that looks like an apple is pretty special too.

You are right, the shakes look sweeter than sugar 😆 O would hate myself for even trying it. Then again, what a fab poster!

Sue, your omelet with mushrooms looks fantastic!!!!! Sometimes the simplest ingredients cooked to perfection are much more worth eating than complex dishes. The cakes they make there though is not my type, but the shakes look great. I am more into savory dishes, and all 4 pictures of what you and your friends ordered look mouth-watering. I probably would have gone for the beautiful heirloom tomato omelet with goat cheese, and unlike Jon, I would have been glad not to find ham in it as I do not eat pork, hehe! One more thing, I am amazed of the obvious quality of all the foods you can eat in Canberra or Australia more generally speaking. This is not something we know of here in Europe, but I’m from time to time watching Masterchef Australia when I can access unrestricted videos, so I am more and more aware that you guys have wonderful ideas in terms of cuisine. The food scene is getting richer by the day in your country, proof is all the dishes you and your greedy friends taste all year long in restaurants!

Omg I was shocked when I saw those shakes! Diabetes and calories overdose guaranteed! The cakes look spectacular too, but even a piece must be giant. Looks like everything is rather on the big side, as well as the menu 😉

Everything looked so good ~ great photos. I do question those shakes (I love milkshakes, but even those looked a little too much!).

All look delicious via your lens, Sue! The milkshake and cakes… might be a bit of too sweet for me, but I’d love to try everything else you’ve posted here. 🙂

Shakes and cakes you are right were too big. The one I bought I had a very small piece and put it back in the fridge. Much too sweet for me. And I didn’t eat all of my scrambled eggs as that was a huge meal too.

Thank you very much and yes I agree they would be too filling and sickly for most of us.

Vinne, ha ha. I think you could only ‘try’ it as you surely would never finish it. So much going on at the top of the shake!!!

Its nice to hear they had vegetarian and vegan options but those shakes look awful. They don’t look at all tempting in fact look like someone tipped a bucket of ingredients on top of the jars. Having said this I’m sure they appeal to some as these type of shakes and cakes with loads of ingredients on top appear to be in vogue at the moment. As usual I loved your post and photgraphs.
